9-29-16 Community Input Needed

The Stowe Town Meeting Task Force, a group formed by the Stowe Selectboard to make recommendations to increase participation at Town Meeting, is currently engaging the community in order to better understand how the community values the annual meetings, whether there are barriers to participation, and how the meeting can be made more relevant in today’s digital and fast moving society.

Please take a few minutes to complete their survey, which is also available at www.townofstowevt.org.

Participation in the Annual Town Meeting, which coincides with the Annual School District Meeting, has declined over the past ten years, from 10% of registered voters to 3.5%.

  • Stowe School Board Brief | September 20, 2016: Principal Search + Town Meeting Survey

A number of parents attended this week's school board meeting with questions about the search for a high school principal to replace Jeff Maher, who announced his retirement in August. Briefly, the process will begin in December with the formation of a search committee comprised of teachers, parents, and administrators. The committee will be appointed by our superintendent, Tracy Wrend, and board chair, Cam Page. As our schools are well regarded, we expect high interest and a quality pool of candidates. The committee, in consultation with Superintendent Wrend, will bring their recommended candidates to the school board for for a hiring decision as early as March. Mr. Maher sets a high bar for his successor and we are committed to finding the best possible principal for Stowe High School.

David Jaqua presented the board with information on the Stowe Town Meeting Task Force, a group formed by the Stowe Selectboard to make recommendations to increase participation at Town Meeting. Participation in the Annual Town Meeting, which coincides with the Annual School District Meeting, has declined over the past ten years, from 10% of registered voters to 3.5%.  The Task Force is currently engaging the community in order to better understand how the community values the annual meetings, whether there are barriers to participation, and how the meeting can be made more relevant in today's digital and fast moving society. Please take a few minutes to complete their survey, which is also available at www.townofstowevt.org.

  • Act 46 Self Evaluation Process Begins - Over the summer, the State Board of Education published draft rules for school districts seeking an alternative to merging under Act 46. This week, the Stowe and Elmore-Morristown school boards met to begin the self-evaluation process required for an "alternative governance structure," in our case two separate school districts operating collaboratively under the umbrella of the Lamoille South Supervisory Union (LSSU). This process will continue for months to come and, as always, the meetings are open to the public. The LSSU board will continue the self-evaluation process at their next meeting on November 30, 2016. Stowe and LSSU minutes and agendas can be found on the new Stowe Schools website at https://sites.google.com/a/lssuvt.org/ssd/home.

  • From the Superintendent: Jeff Maher will be retiring from Stowe High School at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.   He has served the students of the Stowe School District for the last ten years, and his presence at the school will be greatly missed.

    • This means that the school board must make the very important decision of who will be the next principal at Stowe High School.  The process will begin formally in December and include the appointment of a search committee, comprised of teachers, community members and facilitated by an administrator.  The information from the search committee will direct additional exploration of candidates, and, ultimately, inform the decision of the board.  Our goal is to appoint Stowe High School's new principal during March, 2017.

    • Please join us in wishing Jeff the best, and contact me at any point if you have questions, concerns or suggestions.

  • Lost and Found for the Middle School is located in the MS Lobby on the big, green bookcase.  It will be cleared out EVERY FRIDAY.

  • Homework Club: It has officially begun and runs from 2:35pm-3:30pm each day in the Learning Center.

  • Chromebook Cases: Protect your Chromebook with the Raider Chromebook Case. $24 and available at the office.

  • HDAC Young Filmmakers Afterschool Camp - How the story is told will affect whether a film is memorable or utterly forgettable. In this workshop, young filmmakers will explore the basics of storytelling in film with an emphasis on story, plot and characters. Each participant will choose an aspect of film that appeals to them (ie. editing) and will participate on their team in that capacity. The final result will be a collaboratively created short film. This workshop is for every young fan of film regardless of experience.  Starts September 13th!

School Registration Reminder

Our new E-Registration portal is now available!  This post is a follow-up to a letter and an email you should have received. If you have already completed your Parent Portal Single-Sign-On and E-Registration, THANK YOU!
If you have not created your Parent Portal Single Sign-On account and completed E-Registration, please continue reading.

For those who prefer to fill out the forms via paper, traditional printed "summer packets" can still be mailed home upon request or picked up at the school office. Please call your school to make your request.

E-Registration is accessed through the PowerSchool Parent Portal HERE. If you need your parent username and password, please call your school, email support at lssutech@lssuvt.org or contact Melissa Gillen at 802-888-4541 x5559.  For additional instruction on how to create a Parent Portal Single Sign-On account, please click HERE.

E-Registration will allow parents and guardians to update their student's demographic information, electronically sign parent permissions, and view documents and forms via the PowerSchool Parent Portal. We are certain that you will find this to be a more convenient and faster way to update your family’s information with the school.
Lamoille South Supervisory Union is committed to improving communication with families. We are implementing this system to provide a more accurate, flexible, and cost effective approach to collecting and updating student information. We also hope parents will find this system a more convenient and faster way to communicate with schools.
